Food for Thought - Session 1

Today we had a visit from Adele who is from the Heart Foundation.

We learnt that we there are 2 really important reasons for why we need to eat good food:

  • For our learning - so we can concentrate
  • Gives us energy - especially of we do lots of physical activity

We also learnt that there are 4 food groups:

1. FATS

There are some foods that are high in sugar, salt and fats. When we eat too much salt this causes the blood in our veins to stiffen up. When we eat too much fat, it sticks to our arteries and clogs them. This makes it hard for the blood to pump around your body. When the arteries become totally blocked, we can have a heart attack or stroke.

2. FRUITS & VEGETABLES

We should try and eat 5+ a day (3 vegetables + 2 fruit, because fruit has sugar in it). This means 5 servings. A serving size is the size of your palm.

These give us vitamins and minerals. Citrus fruits (like lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit) are high in vitamin C, which helps us to fight off bugs & germs.

They also give us fibre which helps us go to the toilet!

If you can't get fresh fruit and vegetables, you can have other types like canned, frozen, juice (without added sugar) or dried.

3. BREADS & CEREALS

Sandwiches, grains and starches, bread (brown is better than white), weetbix, oats, rice, noodles, pasta, crackers, bagel, wraps

These contain carbohydrates which is energy food. They also contain fibre, which fills you up fibre.

4. LEGUMES, MEAT, SEAFOOD, POULTRY (Legumes are chickpeas, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds, hummus, falafel)

We should eat 1-2 servings a day.
Serving sizes:
  • Red meat (lamb, beef, pork) - palm size
  • Poultry - knuckle to palm
  • Fish - whole hand

Don't forget to cut the fat off the meat!

We get iron from these foods which is good for our muscles. If you play sport, you need this to help repair your muscles!

5. MILK & MILK PRODUCTS (Cow’s milk, soy milk, milk, yoghurt, cheese, ice cream)

2-3 servings
These foods contain calcium which is good for our bones. You need calcium to develop your bones.
Caffeine is the ENEMY of coffee.

On our dinner plate we should have:
1/2 salad or vegetables
¼ carbohydrates
¼ protein

To have a healthy lunch, we need something from each group.
What's in your lunchbox today?

Sugar & Fat with Mrs Kumar

Today we had a special guest in! Mrs Kumar came in to teach Room 13 about sugar & fat and making healthy choices.

We learnt that 1 serving of fruit or vegetables is about the size of our palm and that half our plate should contain fruit or vegetables.

We then learnt about FAT.

Margarine vs butter?

What’s a better choice?
Which is healthier?
Margarine is healthier.
Butter helps us make bread, chocolate, cakes. It has more fat than margarine, which means you have to eat less or exercise more.

Then we learnt about SUGAR.

Did you know that one can of fizzy drink can have 8 teaspoons of sugar

A small carton of Just Juice contains 5 teaspoons of sugar (but it also contains fruit which gives us fibre, which helps feel fuller for longer), but a better option is to eat the fruit.

Powerade has 12 teaspoons of sugar. It is a sports drink for people who don’t have time to eat, and is mostly for athletes who do lots of training.

We learnt that the number one option to drink is water. You can drink as much water as you want. The second best option is milk.

So what choices can we make?
1. Only drink some of it
2. Share it
3. Don't drink it.

Cross Country Training

Cross Country Training is underway! Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday the Rata and Kauri Teams are hitting the pavement in preparation for our cross country that is happening on Friday 2nd September. That means only 12 days to go!

Nearly everyone in Room 13 has been persevering with running, and trying to set themselves goals and targets to achieve each week. It's great to see students pushing themselves and celebrating their success each time they run.

Check out these action shots!

Learner of the Week - Week 4, Term 3

Anthem received the class certificate for Week 4.

Last week's certificate went to Anthem because he showed some empathy and cared for others. During cross country, one of our class members fell over and Anthem was one of the first people to help them. He then went on to complete his cross country training. What a great effort! We are all super proud to say that we have someone this thoughtful and caring as part of Room 13 whanau. Ka pai Anthem!

PB4L - Play fighting

Every Monday morning we have a PB4L lesson. PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Doing PB4L helps us to focus on our learning. This week's PB4L focus is play fighting.

Here is the May Road School Way - we need to do these things to ensure that everyone can learn in a safe and happy environment.

Here are the ideas and suggestions from Room 13 about what they think is acceptable and what is not acceptable when it comes to play fighting.

Do you agree with everyone's suggestions?

Madam Butterfly

As part of our Science learning, we had a very special guest visit us this term. Jacqui Knight has a huge interest in butterflies and she came to May Road to share her expert knowledge. She gave us HEAPS of facts. Here's some of the ones we can remember:

What we learnt from the Butterfly Lady - Jacqui Knight
  • Don’t touch the sticky part of the tag, because the oil from your fingers will not make it last long. (Lorilei)
  • When its raining, butterflies close their wings to keep dry. (Farhad)
  • Don’t release butterflies on rainy and windy days. (Katalina)
  • When it’s raining, butterflies go to a tree and hang out there to keep dry. (Sione)
  • Heaps of rain is bad for the butterflies. (Christina)
  • Hold the back of the butterflies wings when you are tagging them. (Divya)
  • If butterflies want to lay their eggs, they can smell a swan plant from school to the end of Mt Roskill, which is about 2 kilometres. (Jordyn)
  • When you put the tag on the butterfly, you can detect where they are if you put the data into the website. (Ifalame)
  • They use their antennae to sense something. (Akosita)
  • They see colour but their eyesight isn’t very good. (Isabella)
  • Monarch butterflies aren’t scared of humans. (Vaisioa)
  • There is a difference between the male and females. You can tell if its a male because the wings are darker and have 2 dots.  (Marua & Azaar)
  • Butterflies can be tagged. (Sebastian)
  • Butterflies can have lots of babies (between 300 - 1000). (Jeneba)
  • Butterflies can taste with their feet. (Miss Percy)

We are all now super keen to find out more about tagging butterflies and how we can get involved in this special job!

Kawa of Care

The Kawa of Care is a an agreement between the students, their families and the school. Everyone is responsible for following the Kawa of Care when they use a digital device. The Kawa of Care applies at all times as we aim to encourage students to be digital citizens who are cybersmart!

Kawa of Care

  • I will respect the equipment (my Chromebook, power charger and bag) by always looking after it and keeping it safe.

  • I will respect others by always using this Chromebook to interact with anyone in a kind, positive and helpful way.

  • I will make the most of this opportunity to learn lots of new things and to share these with others.

  • I will always be in the right place, at the right time when I am online. If in doubt I will ask my teacher or parent.

  • I will protect my password and keep it completely secret.

  • I will log out when I am not using my Chromebook.

  • When I take my Chromebook home, I will keep it safe when I am not using it.

  • When I take my Chromebook home, I will make sure I bring it to school to use in the same condition that I was given it.

  • Once I am able to take the Chromebook home, I will bring it back to school everyday, charged and ready to use.

We then had to prove that we knew the Kawa of Care in order to receive our chromebooks! Lucky for us, everyone passed!

You can test yourself by using these slides:

Out of the Box Day!

We finally have our chromebooks! Duncan Garner from TV3's Story came in to film us getting our chromebooks! It was very exciting and nervous as we knew we were going to end up on TV!

Now that we have our chromebooks we are currently learning how to be digital citizens who are cyber smart!

Swimming Skills

Learning how to swim is an important part of the curriculum. New Zealand is surrounded by water and knowing how to swim is a basic skill that could help save your life.

Liam, Dushon and Rueben (aka Harry Potter) came in at the beginning of term one to teach us how to swim. We had 10 sessions with them in the water and we learnt how to float on our front and roll over onto our back.

Practising floating on our backs

Some of us learnt how to do freestyle and some of us learnt how to do backstroke.

Learning how to kick

Putting the kicking motion into action
Preparing to use our arms in freestyle swimming

In our last session, we had to work cooperatively in groups to build a boat. This was a real test of our team work abilities!

We have been practising these skills every chance we get to go in the pool and we have all made some great improvements in our swimming!

Learner of the Week x4

A big congratulations goes to Jordyn who was the first 2016 Learner of the Week for Room 13. Jordyn demonstrated her willingness and enthusiasm to help others during the first 4 days of school. It's awesome to have someone in our Room 13 whanau with such a big heart. Keep up the great work Jordyn!

Week 2's Learner of the Week went to Katalina. We've been doing swimming lessons with specialist coaches recently, and Katalina persevered with her swimming, even when the going got tough! We're really proud of her because she kept trying and didn't give up, despite it being really hard!

We have all been focusing on actively listening. This means we look at and face the person who is speaking. We listen carefully and ask the speaker questions about what they have said. Our Learner of the Week in week 3 was Hola. He received his certificate for being an active listener ALL THE TIME! He demonstrated that he can actively listen in the classroom, at assembly, in the swimming pool, in the playground... EVERYWHERE! What a fantastic achievement Hola! It's great that you can apply this skill no matter where you are!

Our Learner of the Week for week 4 was Ausage. During reading time, Ausage persevered to sound out new words. He has developed some really good strategies to help him work out unknown words and he never gave up. Great effort Ausage! Keep it up!!

We are super proud to have such amazing students in Room 13! We can't wait to see who will be our next Learner of the Week!
