Thank You Lynfield College

Last week we were fortunate enough to have some Year 9's from Lynfield College visit us. We got to spend the afternoon on the field with them learning new games that they had created. We had HEAPS of fun! When we got back to class we wrote them some thank you messages to show them how much we appreciated them coming to our school.

 DISCLAIMER:
Eat Your Word’s
Eat Your Word’s was exciting for the second time so i am writing what i reviewed.
in eat your words it was a great time to learn about fruit Sections
the funniest thing is when we learned about asparagus,we learned that it is in the allium Section
because it smells like onion when you pee,it might not work for 50% of people.
The bests activities were food tasting we had to taste some fruit and think what it and write it on a sheet

eat your words.jpg
who ever knew the fruit they were tasting would tick the food they thought was right. At the end of the activities
we got a poster/food recipe/facts about fruit or vegetable sections.

Food for Thought - Term 3

Today we had Food for Thought. In the beginning Adele asked us for our favourite sport and we all done the same thing. She taught us what not to eat and what to eat. We all agreed that we all need to eat healthy food, not food that makes us fat.

Then we all had a cereal box and we all needed to look at the 100 grams per column. The oats were the healthiest option and the weetbix came second. the oats had 5/5, weetbix had 4/5. they were close.

It was nearly the end so Adele showed us some drinks and then we had to guess how many teaspoons of sugar was in them. There were some fizzy drinks and two healthy drinks. the two healthy drinks were water and milk. There was one fizzy drink that Adele had not heard of - it was stars.

We all were impressed by what she has taught us.

Here's Yin Yue's presentation about what she learnt during our Food for Thought sessions:

Here's what Isabella learnt from Adele:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Now that we have GAFE accounts, some of us have been exploring how to use google slides to create presentations in order to share our learning.

Here's one by Jessica & Brianna:

Here's a presentation about recycling by Eften:

Joshua, Akeli & Antonio also created one about the 3 R's:

For more information on how to recycle and reduce your waste in Auckland visit this Rubbish and Recycling link.

Keep Our World Beautiful!

Room 13 recognised 3 environmental weeks over the last few months. They were:

  • Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week
  • Conservation Week
  • Recycling Week
To demonstrate our learning, we have made some radio ads and presentations to share what we have learnt. This is just a sample of what we created.

Playdough Fractions

At the beginning of the term, we did lots of learning about fractions. Miss Malone taught us how to make playdough. We used fractions to make the recipe. Then we used our playdough to make different fractions.

It was a pretty messy experience, but lots of fun!

Cross Country Fun Run

The Amazing Race (Abdullah vs Fiky)

Hurry, hurry, hurry is all I’m thinking of, waiting for my turn, it’s taking too long.
If i come first I will be amazed that’s how I want to, that’s how everyone want’s to feel. I will do two laps if anyone tries to block me I’ll go through the gaps.

Finally my run has bumped into me. “Ready, set, GO!!! “Boom boom boom!!!” I have to sprint incredibly quick, Hanok, Seoram and Fiky right in front of me, they all went past, I don’t want to come last. All of them are speedy, that's not perfect. To tell the truth it’s not all about being boost'y it actually is about pas’e and stamina. Jog, jog, jog is the word. I just started but I’m still coming last. Stand up and never say never because this race is going to get better, take a breath “Go!!!”

This race is weird because there’s up and down hill’s, before this day and race we had drills, run around people’s house and neighbourhoods. “Yes!!” I’m coming third, I’ll see if I can come first, coming last is the worst. Finally, my first lap has finished. “NO!!” that’s not pleasant my shoe lace is untied. I need to run as speedy as flash because Fiky’s behind me, but I can't waste my all energy. I’ll just run, run, run. Unbelievably I can't see Fiky behind me, he can’t be in front, he’s probably walking. “Woohh!!” I have time to tie my laces. “Nope”!! He’s not walking, he’s sprinting! I don’t have time to tie my laces because he’s catching up! I’m extremely close to finishing my second lap. That means I can sprint harder then flash. I’m nearly their, finished.

Fiky’s still running, wait a second, that’s not Fiky - that's someone else! My heart is pumping but it is worth it. “Yes!!” I get to win and wear a bronze medal. It feels awesome. Finally I get to rest. Now I can watch and cheer others. I have improved  from last year. I came third but I’m not going to say winning isn’t everything because the person that said winning isn’t everything never won anything and winning isn’t everything because winning is the only thing.

Visual Art meets Maths!

Last term, Room 13 worked with Miss Kim on visual art.

First, Miss Kim gave us a piece of square paper that had a picture on it and it had a number like 16, 17, 24 at the back of the picture, and she gave us another piece of square white paper to draft.

Before we did it she told us that we need to draw carefully, and try our best. Then we finished it and we needed to take it to her and see it if was correct.

Then she told us the next step. She gave us another piece of square white paper to do the real one. This time Miss Kim said "You need to draw lightly so you can rub out easy, and you need to draw carefully and try your best again so we can be the best out of Room 15 and Room 14.”

When we finish drawing lighting, she get a white piece of white paper and she draw some light, hard, middle hard and draw a circle and finger print with crayon. She told us that we need to copy .

We draw our picture with crayon. Me and Yin Yue just finished in time. We finished colouring few days ago.

This is our finished product!

Barbarian’s Magnificent Day

Finally the day was the day that the Barbarian’s were getting ready. The coach came, and his name was Keli. Getting ready, putting on my t-shirt and shorts, everyone in the Barbarian’s was having so many thoughts. Miss Tipama’a was calling the roll. I think the Barbarian’s already ate breakfast from their bowl. Walking sensibly to the office, waiting for our ride, we are waiting in the office right in side. Sefanaia’s mum is here, Beep! Beep!Beep! “Hurry up! Let's go!”So me, Sefanaia, Ace, Johnson, Sera, Faiupu, and Ace’s mum went, the Barbarian’s had to go to the place and represent.

“Hoorraayy!” we made it, we had to go to our favourite spot next to the beach, when we set it up, the coach Keli had to teach. Beeeeeeeeeeppppppp! The horn rang, we were versing Wesley, it looks like they were coming up like a gang. The whistle began, they began to kick it, I already know my team is already fit, I (Amusia) caught it and ran. I ran it up straight and people think I was the man. After 15mins it had finished, we had won the score was 4-1. We had a little rest, I bet Rueben was the man, and the best. Our next game had started we were versing Favona. There was tall guy, he was so tall, taller than the smaller ones. After 5mins it had finished the score was 1-0 our defensive was all goods. Our next team was a green team. I got concussion, I think I had a dream. After 7mins it had finished, the score was 3-2, we had won. After that we versed Papatoetoe North, they were very big like a very big wig but bigger. After 10mins it had finish, we lost by 2 points. Our next game we versed a blue team, they were so skinny and some were so mini. After 12 mins we had won, the scores were 2-1 we had come 5th in the whole of Auckland.

We to go to school every body’s legs in the Barbarian’s were exhausted.

School Speech Competition

Every student in Room 13 wrote and presented a persuasive speech on a topic of their choice. We had so many different topics in our class that ranged from convincing people that chewing gum should be banned, to encouraging us to save the endangered white tigers, to New Zealander's should be given a 3 day weekend, not 2 days (many of us agreed with that one!).

Some topics even made us think about our own learning, like Wei Kun's speech about should writing books be replaced with chromebooks?

We then voted for our favourite speech contestant. Our finalists then represented our class at the school speech competition.

Our finalists were:

  • Abdullah whose topic was on racism,
  • Seo Ram who convinced many of us that chewing gum should not be banned
  • and Jessica, who posed the question should students stay home if they are sick?

Here's a quick recount written about the beginning of the finals by Noah and Antonio:

On Friday the twenty second of August 2014 it was the school speech finals and the contest was inside the hall. People were cheering for the kids for the contest and then... the contest started. The lovely Mrs Stuart and Ms Noakes were the lovely judges. All the kids were super pumped. The first kid that went up was David and his speech was about racism. The judges were looking for the people with fluency and eye contact.

Speech Finalist

Today was the day where the speech finalists gather together. Thinking, writing, practicing, presenting. These were the topics that were presented, bullying, stay home when your sick, be happy, bubble gum should not be banned, racism, black, white and asian. These were the people that presented: David, Seoram, Abdullah, Maasoama, Faiupu, Jessica, Andre, Atita, Redha. It was all in the hall, no one was scared, stand up straight and teachers saying great. Good that the teachers weren't so late. Time to present, right now, right here, present with no fear.

Then they told us to sit down on the floor, Rachel told us about winter food . Then we got fruits and vegetable and a knife to make our names with. After break we learned how to make burgers with chickpeas we all had lunch together.

The burgers were YUMMY and the patties were soft and nice they were the best ever. We put the chilli sauce on the burgers it was so tasty and wonderful.

Origami

A couple of weeks ago, we worked alongside our buddy class - Room 12, to teach them how to create sailboats and foxes. We did origami which is the art of folding paper. We also learnt a little bit about Japan. Some of us can now make pelicans and ninja stars out of paper too.

It was a sunning day last week on Friday. Room 13 helped Room 12 to make origami boats and foxes out of patterned paper. Room 13 and 12 were split in half. The first half of room 13 and 12 went together and the rest were together into a group as well. Each room 13 student had to buddy up with 1 room 12 student. First, Ms Mey told us about Japan and all about origami and she told us about that Japan is the opposite season from us. Then Ms Mey showed us how to make origami boats. It was very easy to make. Then we switched to room 13 to make a origami fox.The fox was harder this time.

- By Jessica and Miracle

This week Room 13 made a Boat, Fox and a Swan. We taught Room 12 how to make it. It was the easiest thing we've ever made(in our opinion). You need to practice and practice and you will be a master. Origami helps your hand skills. You need to make sure your paper is square.
