Acts of Kindness

Acts of Kindness... what are they?

An act of kindness is something nice that you do for someone else without expecting anything else in return.

When people do kind things for others, everyone feels happy.

We reflected on our own lives and thought about kind things that others have done for us. You can read about what we've experienced in the padlet below.

Created with Padlet

Kid President is one amazing person who inspires others to be kind (and awesome!) You can check out some of his AWESOME videos here and get some tips on what types of kind things you can do for others.

We are now in the process of creating our own Acts of Christmas Kindness Calendars so that we can share our kindness with others.

Check out our individual blogs to see our calendars for the last few weeks of the school year!

3D printing

Woohoo what an exciting day we had today!

We sent out 3D designs to the 3D printer. We had to use lots of measurement and creativity to get our designs just right. We used an online tool called tinkercad to create our key chains. We had to think carefully about the size, design and function. We learnt that we had to convert our designs to an STL file that the printer could read.

Watch this space for more pics and updates about our latest and geatest projects!

Science with Sally - Term 4

Today Sally visited us again and taught us about wastewater. Wastewater is water that we use in our house. For example, toilet water, shower water, water that we use when we brush our teeth, washing machine water and water from the sink after washing the dishes or our hands.

Once the wastewater leaves our house it goes down the sewerage pipes to the sewerage treatment plant in Mangere. The water gets filtered and cleaned, before it makes its way back to the ocean.

Then we did an experiment using fresh water and salt water.

In the first cup we had fresh water. In the second cup we had one teaspoon of salt water. In the third cup we had 2 teaspoons of salt water.

Then we had to add food colouring. We added yellow to the first cup, red to the second cup, and blue to the third cup. When we added the blue food colouring we noticed that the colour sat on the top of the water.

We then mixed the food colouring in the water.

Then we tried used a plastic tube to pick up all 3 colours. We tried to get all 3 colours in the tube. We did yellow first, then red, and blue last.

Here is Sione & Joshua with their plastic tubes. Both of them managed to make a rainbow in their tubes.

Some of us even managed to make green!

What did you learn from today's science lesson with Sally?

Learner of the Week!

This week's learner of the week award goes to Fredrick. Room 13 have been presenting their speeches to the class. Some of us struggled to share our speeches and it was a bit nerve wracking getting up in front of the class to speak. Fredrick used his initiative and offered to help other students by standing next to them to support them when they were reading their speeches.

It's great to see a Year 4 student using their initiative and being a supportive classmate!

Another outstanding achievement from Nabila! She has earned 100 sunshines this year for valuing herself, valuing her learning and respecting all others.

Great work Nabila!

Who will be next to hit the 100 sunshine mark?

Teaching Room 8

This morning we visited Room 8, to teach them our maths games. Room 8 children were really good at listening and following instructions.

Some of the games were too easy, and some of the games were WAY too hard for the students. For our games we created a PMI chart to reflect on our teaching.

My maths game was….

PLUS
MINUS
IMPROVEMENTS
  • Room 8 children listened to the instructions
  • The game was too easy
  • Make changes, by giving them bigger numbers.

We now have a better understanding of what its like to be a teacher!

Maths Week

This week is Maths Week!

We have been doing slightly different maths in Room 13 this week.

Some of the learning that has taken place has included:

  • learning to use google forms and google sheets to collect, collate and chart data
  • designing and creating games for new entrants
  • playing fractionopoly!

Yesterday, James came in to teach us about google forms and google sheets. We had to use a google form to collect our times for the cross country practice run. We then used a google sheet to collate our data in table. After that, we learnt how to chart our the data in the table.

Here is a pie graph showing the times that people have achieved for the cross county practice.

Room 13 have also been working on creating and designing maths games for Room 8. Some of us have made up new games, and some of us have modified games that we know so that they are appropriate for juniors. Tomorrow we will be visiting Room 8 to teach them.

Come back and visit our blog next so you can see how our teaching of the games went!

Learner of the Week! x2!

This first week back has gone SO quickly! We have all been working really hard after having a 2 week holiday. This week we had TWO Learners of the Week!

Nabila received her certificate because she always comes to school with a positive attitude towards her learning. Nabila will try her best, even when she is not confident at something, and will always take responsibility for her learning. It's great to see Nabila developing into a mature Year 5 student!

Nathan earned his certificate for his commitment to his speech writing. Nathan has chosen a speech topic that he is really passionate about. He is going to discuss if minecraft can help us with our learning. Miss Percy is really looking forward to hearing it!

100 Sunshines!

Well done to Meleane, Tulei and Vika!

These girls have worked hard to earn 100 sunshines each! They have:

  • valued themselves
  • valued their learning
  • and respected all others.

As a special reward, these girls got to pick lunch with a teacher. They picked Miss Percy and were treated to cupcakes and got to listen to music. It was a great way to end the term!

Keep up the great work girls!!

Kauri Team Assembly & Learner of the Week

The Kauri Team had been learning about using percussion to make sounds. Here we are at assembly sharing a piece we learnt using body percussion.

Our Learner of the Week was Meleane.
