Sugar & Fat with Mrs Kumar

Today we had a special guest in! Mrs Kumar came in to teach Room 13 about sugar & fat and making healthy choices.

We learnt that 1 serving of fruit or vegetables is about the size of our palm and that half our plate should contain fruit or vegetables.

We then learnt about FAT.

Margarine vs butter?

What’s a better choice?
Which is healthier?
Margarine is healthier.
Butter helps us make bread, chocolate, cakes. It has more fat than margarine, which means you have to eat less or exercise more.

Then we learnt about SUGAR.

Did you know that one can of fizzy drink can have 8 teaspoons of sugar

A small carton of Just Juice contains 5 teaspoons of sugar (but it also contains fruit which gives us fibre, which helps feel fuller for longer), but a better option is to eat the fruit.

Powerade has 12 teaspoons of sugar. It is a sports drink for people who don’t have time to eat, and is mostly for athletes who do lots of training.

We learnt that the number one option to drink is water. You can drink as much water as you want. The second best option is milk.

So what choices can we make?
1. Only drink some of it
2. Share it
3. Don't drink it.

Cross Country Training

Cross Country Training is underway! Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday the Rata and Kauri Teams are hitting the pavement in preparation for our cross country that is happening on Friday 2nd September. That means only 12 days to go!

Nearly everyone in Room 13 has been persevering with running, and trying to set themselves goals and targets to achieve each week. It's great to see students pushing themselves and celebrating their success each time they run.

Check out these action shots!

Learner of the Week - Week 4, Term 3

Anthem received the class certificate for Week 4.

Last week's certificate went to Anthem because he showed some empathy and cared for others. During cross country, one of our class members fell over and Anthem was one of the first people to help them. He then went on to complete his cross country training. What a great effort! We are all super proud to say that we have someone this thoughtful and caring as part of Room 13 whanau. Ka pai Anthem!

PB4L - Play fighting

Every Monday morning we have a PB4L lesson. PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. Doing PB4L helps us to focus on our learning. This week's PB4L focus is play fighting.

Here is the May Road School Way - we need to do these things to ensure that everyone can learn in a safe and happy environment.

Here are the ideas and suggestions from Room 13 about what they think is acceptable and what is not acceptable when it comes to play fighting.

Do you agree with everyone's suggestions?

Cook Island Maori Language Week

Kia Orana!

Last week was Cook Island Maori Language Week. To celebrate we had a special assembly on Friday. We sang the Cook Island National Anthem, and Kia Orana - one of our favourite songs. Marua performed a beautiful dance with some of the other senior girls. Watch this space for some photos!

Learner of the Week - Week 2, Term 3

This week's Learner of the Week was Hola.

Hola recieved his certificate for working well as a great team member. When Hola works in a group, he tries really hard to actively listen, makes sure everyone has a chance to share their thinking and checks that everyone understands.

He is a respectful member of the Room 13 whanau and we are very lucky to have him in our class!

Learner of the Week - Week 1, Term 3

Well done to Vaisioa who was Room 13's first Learner of the Week for Term 3!

Vaisioa is a great role model at May Road School. She tries really hard to always do the right thing. This means she:

  • values herself
  • values her learning
  • and respects all others
Keep up the great work Vaisioa!
