Wet Day Breaks!

When its a wet day we have to stay inside the classroom for our morning tea and lunch. Sometimes we get a little crazy and forget what games or activities are appropriate. To combat this problem we have collaborated as a class to create...

Miss Percy has given us some feedback about our slides, but we would love to hear from you.

What games or activities do you play in your class when its raining?

2017 Ako Hiko Student Toolkits

WOW! How lucky am I? Yesterday I got to take 22 amazing May Road Students to the 3rd Ako Hiko Student Toolkits session at New Windsor School.

We had 2 groups of students run 2 different workshops where they taught other students across the Ako Hiko Cluster.

Fredrick, Lata, Maaiasepi and Siaosi ran a toolkit on how to use Thinglink.

Jordyn, Seem and Vaisioa ran one on how to use Tinkercad.

These students created a presentation that they used to help teach others. Such an awesome way for these students to build their confidence and leadership skills!

There were HEAPS of different toolkits - you can check some of them out by visiting this site

Some of our students also participated in a coding challenge and a problem solving challenge. They were pretty tricky!

Here's a quick look at what happened throughout our day:

What is your favourite tool or app that you know how to use? Maybe we can run a workshop on it in 2018! Comment below and let us know!

Geometry!

We are learning about GEOMETRY for maths!

We learnt about symmetry with Miss Nakhla. We got to go on a treasure hunt around the school to search for objects that are symmetrical. We found heaps!

Here are some of the photos that we took:

Can you find the line of symmetry in each object?

We have also been learning about orientation and position. Here's some of the new vocabulary that we have been learning:

We even got to play Battleships to help us learn about coordinates!

Life Education & Harold the Giraffe

In week one, we had a visit from Carleen, Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education caravan.

In our first session we learnt about choices vs decisions.

Choices are the options that we have. Decisions are what we CHOOSE to do. Every time we make a decision there are have influences that can make us change our minds. Some influences can include: past experiences, friends, family, media, money, work, time.

Inside the Life Education Caravan with Harold the Giraffe!
We also learnt that every decision we make has a consequence. The consequence can be positive (like a reward), or it can be negative (like going to time out).

In our second session, we learnt that our choices influence our reputation. A reputation is the respect or admiration someone receives based on their past behaviour.

Did you know that you can change your reputation? Read on if you want to know how!
Start by being good! CHANGE YOUR BEHAVIOUR! Remember that the choice of words we use are important.

We also learnt another about another thing, known as peer pressure. Peer pressure is when your friends try to make you do something that you don't want to do.

Room 13 and Carleen discuss some BIG issues!

There are 3 different ways that we can deal with peer pressure:
1. Be agressive - this is not a good way to deal with issues because people get angry
2. Be passive - giving in, this means you may be unhappy with the consquence
3. Be assertive - don't back down, keep calm, say what you want and stick to it - this is a good way to deal with peer pressure.

What was your favourite learning from the Life Ed Caravan?

Valuing Our Learning

Our first 2 weeks for PB4L was about Valuing Our Learning. We had lots of discussions with Miss Nakhla around what this looks like in our class.

Then we set our own goals around how we could value our learning. Everyone has their own goal and it's up to us to make sure that we achieve them.

Congratulations to Mehran who was our first Learner of the Week for Term 3!

Mehran received this certificate from Miss Nakhla for being focused on his work and helping others when he is finished his own learning.
